Youth Program Coordinator

Compeer promotes good mental health among adults, youth, older adults, and veterans through supportive friendships. This non-clinical layer of support provides our neighbors with the care and support they need to reach their mental wellness goals. We believe that the healing power of friendship, of just one caring friend, is life changing for an individual striving for mental wellness.

Compeer Buffalo operates five core programs, each focusing on friendship and supportive relationships to encourage mental wellness. These include 1:1 volunteer mentoring, group mentoring, social activities, school-based mentoring, and Mental Health First Aid training.

Compeer Buffalo is looking for an experienced and passionate Youth Program Coordinator to take our youth program to the next level! People from diverse communities are encouraged to apply.

Position Summary:

The Youth Program Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the 1:1 mentoring portion of the youth program to ensure adherence to Compeer’s policies and procedures. The primary functions are to:

• Interview and screen prospective volunteers.
• Match volunteers with program participants and provide ongoing support of matches (including celebrating successes and navigating challenges) to ensure a successful relationship.
• Work to facilitate ongoing parent/caregiver engagement.
• Ensure quality programming and efficient documentation, data collection and progress monitoring.
• Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders – including mental health professionals, parents/caregivers, volunteers, program participants and school professionals.
• Complete reports for funding partners.
• Support Compeer’s social activities for clients of all ages.
• Assist with supporting the School-Based Mentoring component of the youth program.
• Facilitate the Youth Advisory Board.
• Oversee 1-6 teen clients each summer who work for Compeer through the Erie County Summer Youth Employment Program.
• Coordinate youth client orientation and work as a close partner with our Client Support Coordinator.

The Coordinator is supervised by the Director of Youth Services and collaborates with and supports other team members to achieve organizational goals.

Required Qualifications/Skills:

• Must embrace the Compeer mission.
• 5+ years of experience in the mental health and/or human services field.
• Demonstrated knowledge of mental health and youth behavior, combined with a passion for advocacy and helping to decrease the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
• Comfortable matching volunteers and youth program participants across many types of locations throughout Erie County: client homes, various community locations, and in a virtual setting.
• Ability to work 1-2 evenings/weekends per month to accommodate the schedule of volunteers and families.
• Familiarity with working in a school setting.
• Be organized and exhibit excellent follow through on tasks and goals.
• Display an outgoing positive attitude, be a team player and operate efficiently.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and provide a reliable means of transportation for the performance of work responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

• Demonstrated experience training volunteers, college student interns and/or members of the greater community.

Education:   Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree required.


Competitive/commensurate with experience and other qualifications. Salary range of $38,000-$42,000 plus generous benefits.

Job Type: Full-time, Non-Exempt

Hours/Days: 35 hours a week, typical hours 9a-5p, some non-traditional hours.
